The Sweetest and the Best

Katherine Anne Summers looked down at her sleeping son.  Scott was the sweetest child she'd ever seen. Chris joked a lot, said "Every baby is the sweetest and the best," but she knew Scott was the sweetest anyway.  She tucked the blanket around him and smiled on him, stroking the fine down that served him as hair.  He smiled and cooed in his sleep.  She thought that his toothless gums were utterly adorable.  She wondered what they'd look like with teeth, what his head would look like with thick brown hair on it.

"What kind of man will he be when he's grown?" she wondered.  "Will he be a good man?  I hope I raise him properly.  I hope Chris and I are there for him.  We always take so many risks on the planes.  I won't worry, though.  I'm sure we'll be all right."  She put another blanket over him and dropped a kiss on his tiny cheek.  "Sleep well, little son."
