Cable's relationship with his family (particularly with his father, Cyclops) has always been a particular source of fascination for me. There are so many emotions, on all sides. Guilt and anger and uncertainty, and from time to time, a sense of abandonment on Nathan's part, but there's a great deal of love and respect there as well. The Summers family is the butt of lots of jokes, both in the books themselves and among the fan fiction community, but they have a definite resilience, through all their trial and tribulations, and I can't help admiring that.

This 'theme' caused me fits as I was designing the archive, mostly because it runs through so much of my fic. I eventually decided to leave Summers-flavored stories in their series, if they had them. But I should point out that a lot of the stories that would have fit here are over on the Postapocalyptic page instead, because I had to compromise to avoid excessive double-listing.

After The Fall
(PG)
Sequel to Jaya Mitai's On Letting Go. After a disastrous mission, Scott tries to cope with his son's death. This was the first time I tried to write a sequel to someone else's fic--turned out rather well, I think. Make sure you check out Mitai's story, so long as you have kleenex close to hand.
This is an amazing look at Scott Summers, the father (even if you are not a big Cyclops fan - read this!).~JenMorrioghan

Beyond
(PG)
Nathan leaves a farewell message for his father, just in case...When I first wrote this, it was just an attempt to experiment a little with format and practice writing in Cable's 'voice'. Now, though, I sort of wonder about a framing context for it. Is Nathan dictating the message here? Or is Scott listening to it? Food for thought... ;)
A beautiful example of Alicia's uncanny understanding of Nathan's and Scott's relationship. ~JenMorrioghan

Beyond The Pale
(PG-13)
What was happening to Cable while Stryfe was in control of his body? I like to call this one my experiment with sensory-deprivation narration--you probably wouldn't believe all the time I spent deciding on things like 'upper-case or lower case?', so on and so forth. When you know you're going to post a story in plain text, sometimes the formatting issues can be thorny... This one got a rather bizarre review at the Prosh Awards one year...I was criticized for inaccurate continuity on a particular matter. The really hilarious side of this was that what they thought was canon was actually 'fanon' (fanon is what happens when something is written so often in fan fiction that it becomes commonly accepted), and there's nothing at all in canon to contradict the "inaccuracy" in this story. ::sigh:: I suppose given my contribution to 'fanon', I can't really bitch...;) But it's a great deal funnier in retrospect than it was at the time.

Duet
(PG-13)
When Nate Grey accidentally kills Cable while the two of them fought Apocalypse, he finds out that for some actions, there is not such thing as mitigating circumstances...Written for the OTL Scary Story challenge. I honestly thought this was mildly creepy, at best, but apparently a few people found it quite chilling. There's a sequel to this hanging around on my hard-drive somewhere, half-completed...

Flying Dutchman
(PG)
Nathan, Scott, and Chris Summers get together for a bit of a vacation on the Starjammer, but the trip takes a surprising turn when they receive a distress signal and go to investigate. After I wrote 'Summer Rain', I knew I had to revisit the Summers men at some point. Hence, the road-trip. ;) It was an excuse for me to pay all kinds of silly little homages to Star Trek, as well. I had a great deal of fun writing this.
Another of my all-time favorites. (Yeah, I have a lot of those.) Highly recommended! ~JenMorrioghan

January's Children
(PG)
Nathan and Stryfe play out their own personal drama, over and over and over again... Very, very strange fic, this one. I sometimes get too engrossed in the surreal, although a very interesting almost-plot crept into this one, eventually. I do prefer to think that Stryfe is still in Nathan's head, and that the various incarnations of him we've seen since have other reasons for their existence... there's so much more fic-potential, that way.

Little Brother
(PG-13)
Two years after Nathan rescues Rachel from Gaunt and brings her back to the present, the two of them are at odds, and Rachel takes drastic steps to resolve the situation. Make sure that you take a look at the picture I've linked in the author's notes to this story, before you read the story; this was my first successful experiment with the pic-to-fic method. It's quite dark, and screams for a follow-up, but I so don't need another series on my hands. I suppose this took the shape it did because I can't quite believe the happy relationship canon Nathan and Rachel have. It really doesn't seem plausible, given everything that happened and the fact that they've actually never had the chance to get to know each other, which MIGHT have mitigated that...

The Patron Saint Of Lost Causes
1 2 3
(PG-13)
Injured, ill and exhausted, Nathan takes a break from his latest 'crusade' to spend Christmas with his sister. This one is just about the complete flipside of 'Little Brother'. It's based on early Tischman-CABLE continuity, rather than in the future, and the portrayal of Nathan and Rachel's relationship is a highly positive one. This story turned out a lot warmer than I thought it would, which is only fitting, I suppose, given that it was a Christmas story...;)

Penumbra
(PG)
A very odd dream reveals to Scott a part of his son's life that he never dreamed existed. My attempt to introduce a bit of my backstory for Cable which is going to become quite important, a little later in the Outsider's Arc.

Summer Rain
(PG)
Corsair comes home to Earth for a visit, and finally gets to meet his grandson as an adult. The fact that Marvel has still, to this day, never had Corsair and Cable meet on panel is an absolute travesty. Especially when they'd get along so well... ;)

Take Me Out To The Ballgame...
(PG-13)
Nathan and Scott take a trip into the city to take care of some legal business and catch a baseball game, but the day takes an unexpected and dangerous turn. Cable's 'legal' background has always interested me, and I never let the opportunity to write father-son bonding pass me by. Admittedly, this story took an odd, dark turn, and never spawned the larger tale I expected, but I think it still stands well enough on its own.
This story explores a little known (canon) aspect of Cable's life, and is one of the most insightful examinations of Scott and Nathan's relationship I have seen! ~JenMorrioghan
