I can't help but think that Cable - or Nathan
Dayspring, rather, in this context - must have been a very different man
before he lost his family and his Clan, and came back to the twentieth
century. Something like that had to have changed him greatly--so what WAS
he like as the leader of the Clan Chosen? Add that intriguing question to
all the potential world-building you can do in this context, and I was
hooked like a fish. ;)--Alicia
And she has hooked me as well. Alicia has
taken the time to truly delve into what makes Cable tick. Her examination
of this period in his life truly demonstrates her skill as a writer. This
is a time that Marvel has largely ignored. Fortunately for us, Alicia has
corrected that oversight. :) ~JenMorrioghan
Vow (PG) Nathan makes a promise to Jenskot. I wrote and
posted this around Valentine's Day. It really was somewhat inappropriate,
I think. It's a deceptive story, this one; it takes on a whole new
dimension if you know enough about Cable's history.
Belisarius Laughed (PG) Nathan Dayspring sets out on a dangerous mission to
liberate a city from Canaanite control without telling Jenskot... The
beginning of my thirty-eighth century world-building efforts, and very
loosely inspired (I won't say based) on a perhaps apocryphal story of
Belisarius and Antonina. Hence, the title. ;)
Live To Fight Another
Day (PG) The Clan Chosen
lose a city to the Canaanites, and Nathan learns once more about the
demands of leadership. A mournful little story, really, but it's got a
good solid 'point' to it, I suppose.
Wenceslas (PG) On the festival eve of Winternight, Nathan Dayspring
and his son Tyler make an unexpected journey to help someone in need...a
journey that foreshadows one that Domino and Sam Guthrie will make years
into Nathan's future, and two millenia in the past. My Christmas fic
for 2000, and definitely one of the more ambitious single (non-epic)
stories I've ever undertaken.
Night Falls (PG-13) After the defeat of the Clan Chosen, Stryfe visits
Dayspring in his cell. The source material for this story was a dream.
yes, it was a very unpleasant dream. Made one heck of a compelling idea,
though. ;)
Pyrrhic (PG-13) The leader of the Clan Chosen contemplates triumph
over the Canaanites, and the price paid for victory. A what-if that
came to me as a fully-formed idea. I do so love it when they do that;
makes them much easier to write.
Vindex (PG-13) A sad little story about collateral damage, set after
the defeat of the Clan Chosen. One of my favorite of my 'subway
stories'--stories written based on ideas I got while commuting from home
to university. After all, one has to do something with those extra two
hours a day, if one doesn't want to wind up suffering from 'transit
rage'...;)
My second series (after the Outsider's Arc)
and still quite a fan favorite. I've always found this part of Cable's
life fascinating; this is when he met Domino, when he adapted to this
century. I have more Wild Pack ideas than I will probably ever find the
time to write, so keep an eye out for new ones coming out sporadically.
;)--Alicia
These are some of my favorite Alicia-fics. The
stories are rich in language and setting. Alicia brings the Pack to life
with great characterization and interplay between the Pack members, most
especially Nate and Dom. ~JenMorrioghan
First Dance 1 2 3 (PG-13) The Wild Pack is looking for a new member, and the
young woman known as Domino is positive she's the perfect one for the job.
Now, if only she can survive the interview...I had to write this,
after the stray reference in another story about what Domino did to Bridge
during her 'interview'. Looking back on it, this story became a little
more significant than I expected it to; it was my take on how Dom and
Cable first met, and it created a pattern of interaction that's visible in
many of my other stories. Very interesting...
Truth In The Tequila 1 2 3 (PG-13) A mission gone bad awakens dark and painful memories
for Cable, and the rest of the Pack is floored by his unique 'coping
strategy'. This was the story that just about made me quit
fanfiction--yes, I'm quite serious. :) It was horrifically frustrating to
write, the first couple of drafts were terrible, and if I hadn't sat down
and decided I was going to beat it into submission if it killed me, I have
to wonder where my fanfic career would have gone, afterwards... ;) Looking
back on it, though, I do think it's one of the better things I've written.
I suppose all that effort had to have some good consequences.
Friendly Fire 1 2 (PG-13) Not long after joining the Pack, Domino makes a
disastrous mistake on a mission, and both she and Cable have to deal with
the consequences. The first Wild Pack story, which makes me itch,
every time I read it, because I want to rewrite it so badly! I have an
obsessive-perfectionistic streak a mile wide, in case you hadn't realize
yet. Still, there are a couple of good moments here, and I remember the
feedback I got on this fic quite warmly.
Tango In Volgograd (PG-13) On a mission in Russia, Cable and Domino find their
relationship moving onto an entirely new level. My take on a
first-time story for Nate and Dom. I still rather like the setting, and
the dialogue, and the Professor/Ship/Prosh doing his best to steal every
scene he was in. I think this was the last fic before I shook the bad
habit of being shy and fading to black just at the good part...;)
The Second-Best Way To Prevent
Hypothermia (PG-13) The Pack's
helicopter goes down in the wilderness, and Cable and Domino choose the
most enjoyable way to keep warm. Written as a birthday present for
Brooke. Just a light, fluffy, mostly-comedic piece. The dialogue-only
sections worked quite well in this story, I thought.
Turn Around And Face Your
Fate (PG-13) After the
Pack's final mission, Cable has to face up to the consequences of that
last, horrific decision. Just a vignette, set after the disaster in
the Yucatan. It's chronologically at the end of the Wild Pack series, but
since I've been writing them out of order all along, it's certainly not
the end of the series. ;)
...And The Years Have
Left No Mark (PG) Time travel does
strange things to the aging process--enigmatic, but true. My attempt
to make some sense out of Cable's edge, and Marvel's waffling on the
subject. I sort of like my theory, still, although anyone with a decent
knowledge of physics can probably shoot all kinds of holes in it...
:)
Brave New World 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 in
progress... (PG-13) Thrown off the
battlefield into a past world he knows nothing about, a confused and
disoriented Nathan Dayspring turns for help to Charles Xavier. One of
my longest ongoing stories, and one of my very favorites. Just imagine the
culture shock you would have if you'd be thrown two thousand years into
the past. This story gives me the opportunity to write a number of my
lesser-used favorite characters - Xavier, Moira, Amelia Voght - as well as
Nathan at such a critical moment in his past.
Wiser Days 1 2 3 4 (PG-13) A young British Intelligence agent by the name of
Pete Wisdom is sent to 'remove' Cable, and an assassination attempt turns
into the beginning of a beautiful friendship. This is the story behind
Wisdom's explanation in True Believers of how he and Cable met, so it's an
Outsider's Arc backstory, not an attempt to fit a first encounter between
them into mainstream canon. Although, come to think of it, there's not
much that couldn't work on that level, here... after all, we've never seen
Cable and Wisdom interact on panel... ;)
