Cable-Related Poetry
I haven't done a great deal of this, but the urge occasionally hits me, now and again. :)
X-Men 100 Drabbles
I belonged to the X-Men 100 drabble community on Livejournal for a couple of months. The idea of the community was that you wrote short ficlets (100 words, ideally) inspired by weekly challenges. I did much better on the 'free' weeks, though. :)
Sandman
I broke my bank account one fall buying all the trade paperbacks of
the Sandman series. I think each of the Endless would have something to
say to Cable, and eventually, they will. As always, it's just a
matter of getting time to do it. I think it's typical of me to
have written what would seem to be the 'end' of the series ('So Long,
Farewell') first...
Just Passing Through... (PG-13) When a solo
mission for the Pack goes wrong, an injured and delirious Cable is
visited by a strange little girl and her talking dog... Need to
relax, and feel like doing something utterly crazy? Try writing
Delirium-speak. It really is a blast.
So Long, Farewell (PG-13) Death comes
for Cable after he dies fighting Apocalypse. I wrote this and posted
it under a pseudonym to OTL, as a belated answer to the "Guess The
Author?" challenge (although I didn't advertise it as such). I was
enormously entertained by the feedback letters telling me that it
sounded almost like an Alicia-fic. ;)
Stormwatch/The
Authority
Stormwatch and the Authority are a newer obsession for me, but a
persistent one (check out for Allegiance for evidence of
that :). Eventually I will get back to writing some more stories in this
universe. Despite my usual lack of a time and my general sourness towards
what writers did with the Authority after Ellis, the characters simply
have too much potential to resist for long.--Alicia
Stories like these are the reason I started reading the Authority. I really should be upset with Alicia for this. If it wasn't for her writing these characters so well, I would be spending less on comics, rather than more. :) ~ JenMorrioghan
Cold Fire (PG) After defeating his old friend and enemy, the man
now known as M.A.D.-1, and saving Russia from nuclear holocaust, an
injured Winter gets a visit from his concerned teammates as he
recuperates in his quarters aboard Skywatch. I didn't get into
Stormwatch until after I started reading the Authority, and I have to
say, part of me likes the old team just a teeny bit better. Mostly
because of Winter. I have this real weakness for silver-haired, brooding
tough guys, what can I say? ;)
Dickensian
Moments (PG) On their first Christmas as members of the
Authority, Apollo and the Midnighter reflect on years past and how much
their lives have changed. My CFAN Holiday Project fic for 1999. A
bit of fluff masquerading as an introspective vignette.
Eclipse (PG) With Kaizen
Gamorra's 'circle' broken, Apollo and the Midnighter share their
impressions of the Authority's first mission and enjoy some downtime.
My first Authority fic, and just a vignette, really. For a while
now, I've been of the school that thinks it's a good idea to ease
yourself into a new universe before trying to creat epics. ;)
Good
Faith (PG-13) After the mission against Sliding Albion, the
Midnighter has serious doubts about the team's actions on the alternate
Earth. A bit more substance to this one, mostly provoked by the
moral issues that arose out of the Authority's second mission.
Half Life (PG-13) The Authority has defeated their 'replacements' and retaken the Carrier, but there's a hole in their ranks no victory can fill. I loathe Mark Millar's writing. I'm also appalled by the fact that he IS capable of jettisoning the pervasive tackiness and writing a compelling scene like the one that sparked this fic. Why, in that case, he chooses to be so tacky and tasteless is utterly beyond me. Ahem. Anyhow, discussion of character death in this one, folks, so if that's not your cup of tea, please steer clear.
Harvest 1 2 in progress... (PG-13) Scythe is
killed assisting the UN in her native Yugoslavia, but as Winter tries to
cope with the reality of her death, the mystery behind it draws him
inexorably into danger. My first attempt at an 'epic' set in this
universe--centred around Winter, of course. Given that the man only ever
had one real love interest in sixty-odd issues, you know there's
potential there...;)
Tomb
Raider
There was a lot that was fairly drek-ish about 'Lara Croft: Tomb
Raider'. But there was also Angelina Jolie, and a wonderful novelization
that made me think wistfully about what the script must originally have
looked like, and a lot of unrealized potential. Hence, my first tentative
steps outside comics fandom. ;)
Mani (PG-13) The
story of the 'incident in Tibet', and how Lara Croft and Alex West had
their falling out. Lara and Alex really didn't have a lot of
chemistry on-screen in the movie. In the novelization, however, that
couldn't be farther from the truth. There was a real - if combative and
slightly perverse - relationship there, which was what inspired me to
write Tomb Raider fic in the first place.
Batman
I have a number of good friends deeply involved in the DC fandom,
and eventually I gave in, did as they'd been urging me to, and wrote a
Batman story. Only one, so far. Maybe someday I'll go back to Gotham...
:)
Soul Of The City (PG) During 'Knightsend', Bruce Wayne prepares to take
back his city from the man he chose as his successor. A lot of DC
writers seem to prefer the younger generation of Batfolk (Nightwing,
Azrael, Robin, Draco) but I've always felt most drawn to the Dark Knight
himself. I think it's a 'type', really, that I'm attracted to...
Self-Insertion
History Buffs (G) Working alone in the library, a grad student
encounters a very unusual visitor. This story is on this page, all by
its lonesome, because it's Very Special. ;) It's the only story in which
Cable shares the spotlight with me. It was written in response to the
'Realistic Self-Insertion' Challenge on OTL. It's very interesting to
read, and see just how frustrated and overworked and over-my-head I was
during my first year of doctoral studies. It seems like a world away...
:)
24
I was very taken this year with the Fox show '24', a thriller about
a counterterrorism unit led by Jack Bauer, played by Kiefer Sutherland
(who's always been a favorite of mine). For those of you unfamiliar with
the show, it takes place in 'real' time--24 hours in 24 episodes.
Silence And Tears (PG-13) Jack in the minutes after midnight. The finale of season one absolutely blew me away, and this is just a bit of a reaction fic, picking up where the episode left off. Lots of spoilers, as a result, and it doesn't really stand well on its own unless you're familiar with the show, although I did my best... :)
Silent Night (PG-13) Jack and a very blue Christmas. Written for the 2002 Holiday Project. Very, very depressing. At least with season 2 of 24, I actually have a prospect of some happier fics set in this 'universe'. ;)
